There’s something magical about being up before the world wakes—and for this summer engagement session at Barnegat Lighthouse (affectionately known as Old Barney), that magic showed up in full force.

As a local to the area, photographing here never gets old. From the towering red-and-white lighthouse to the soft sand dunes and sweeping water views, Barnegat Light offers endless natural beauty. And as a true morning person, nothing beats sharing a sunrise with my camera, my clients, or my dog on quiet walks along the coast.

A Couple Who Loves Sunrises as Much as I Do

This sweet couple had just gotten engaged and told me how much they love watching the sunrise together, even making the early-morning drive from North Jersey to the shore just to catch those first golden rays. So when they reached out for an engagement session and asked if I’d be open to an early shoot, it was an easy and enthusiastic “YES!”

We planned, rescheduled, and planned again—June brought so much rain that I ended up moving four other shoots that same week. Weather is always a wildcard with outdoor photography, especially when sunrise timing is so specific. But I always work with clients to build in flexible “rain dates” whenever possible.

Finally, The Morning We’d Hoped For

After a few weather delays, we landed on the perfect morning. The sky lit up in soft pinks, oranges, and golds—just cloudy enough for drama, but clear enough for that dreamy glow. The breeze kept things cool and comfortable, and the entire area felt calm, peaceful, and private—like it was just for them.

We explored the tall grassy patches, the sandy walkways near the dunes, and of course, captured portraits beneath the massive lighthouse. Every backdrop here feels distinct, yet cohesive. Whether you're walking along the jetty, standing among the sea grass, or posing with the lighthouse towering behind you, Barnegat Light offers so many ways to tell a love story.
